Case Study: Water Pipeline Hanger Inspection – Narrows Bridge

Remote sensing inspection on the condition of 400+ pipe hangers

Client
Water Corporation
Project Status
2024
Location
Perth, WA

Drawing on many years of experience delivering complex asset inspection projects, Sensorem was ideally positioned to assist the Water Corporation by providing advanced drone technology, certified Remote Pilots, and a highly experienced planning team for an intricate inspection under one of Perth’s most renowned landmarks, the Narrows Bridge.

The project involved inspecting more than 400 pipe hangers that support critical water infrastructure running beneath the bridge. Given the importance of this infrastructure, it was essential that every element of the inspection was meticulously planned and executed to capture extremely high-resolution images. These images were carefully catalogued and analysed to identify any signs of wear, corrosion, or defects that could compromise the integrity of the pipes.

Reducing risks and improving inspection safety

Conducting this inspection came with significant challenges, including operating in a high-risk environment near water and busy roads, where safety was paramount. The project required careful coordination between the drone operators, safety officers, and the broader inspection team to ensure that both the public and the inspection team were always protected. In addition, the drones provided a safer, more efficient method of capturing detailed visual data without the need for scaffolding or manual inspections, which reduced the risks associated with working at height and in hazardous conditions. This enabled Sensorem to deliver precise, actionable insights to the Water Corporation, ensuring the long-term safety and performance of this critical infrastructure.

Technology Deployed

Sensorem deployed the DJI M300 RTK, equipped with top-mounted cameras, alongside ground-based remotely operated camera systems to collect the necessary data for the inspection. The DJI M300 RTK, known for its precision, stability, and advanced imaging capabilities, was particularly suited for this challenging environment. The top-mounted camera setup allowed for comprehensive inspections of the pipe hangers, capturing detailed images from unique angles that would otherwise be difficult to access. Additionally, ground-based camera systems operated remotely provided supplementary perspectives, ensuring thorough coverage of the entire asset.

The operation took place from both land and a pontoon vessel, strategically positioned to facilitate data capture in a safe and efficient manner. By utilising cutting-edge remote sensing technologies, including advanced drones and high-definition cameras, Sensorem was able to conduct the inspection with minimal disruption to the surrounding environment and public activity. This approach not only significantly reduced the need for traditional inspection methods, such as scaffolding or rope access, but also enhanced the overall safety of the operation by minimising human exposure to hazardous conditions near the water and busy roads.

Project Success

Sensorem’s remote sensing inspection team executed this project with an unwavering commitment to both safety and quality at every stage. From meticulous planning through to data collection and analysis, every aspect of the inspection was designed to ensure the highest standards were met. The project was completed on schedule and within budget, demonstrating Sensorem’s ability to deliver efficient and reliable results, even in complex environments.

The final data was delivered through Sensorem’s unique interactive reporting format, inlcuding cloud-based visualisation software that allowed the client to easily access, navigate, and analyse the collected data. This dynamic format provided a seamless, user-friendly experience, enabling stakeholders to gain a deeper understanding of the asset’s condition.

The quality of the imagery and data collected exceeded the client’s expectations, offering unprecedented levels of detail. This level of precision provided key decision-makers with the confidence to accurately assess the condition of the infrastructure and plan future remediation works with a high degree of certainty. The ability to visualise defects, wear, and potential issues in such fine detail empowered the client to prioritise and strategize remediation efforts, ensuring the longevity and safety of the asset. Sensorem’s innovative approach not only delivered exceptional data but also equipped the client with the tools needed for informed, long-term decision-making.
